China bag first gold medal at London Olympics

London, Jul 28: Chinese shooter Yi Siling bagged the first gold at the London Olympics on Saturday. Top-ranked Ti won her the medal in the women's 10-metre air rifle while her compatriot Yu Dan won the bronze. Sylwia Bogacka of Poland won the silver.

Australian swimmer Michael Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the 2008 Games, just managed to qualify in the heats for the 400-metre individual medley final. South Korean Park Tae-hwan, who won the 400 freestyle heat at Beijing, was disqualified due to a false start. Paul Bidermann of Germany, the world-record holder in the event, failed to make the final.
